In like a lion: Intro to Spring Events

In a few short days March will be upon us and after this winter Spring can't come quick enough. The old saying "in like a lion, out like a lamb" will be half true for us here at Capo's. We are coming into Spring like lions with a lot great things planned for our customers. I have just completed the Spring edition of The Bark, our quarterly newsletter which covers March, April and May. We have some interesting news we are sharing including new lines coming into the store and lots of cool new events, classes and opportunities. I will be writing about several of these opportunities individually throughout the Spring months but I wanted to give you an idea of what we have ahead for you.

One of our founding beliefs is that education is essential for growth. To that end we offer a lot of events and we offer a full line of instructional materials. We have instructors for all our major instruments including Guitar (classical and flatpick), Banjo (clawhammer and bluegrass style) Mandolin, Autoharp, Mountain Dulcimer, Fiddle/Violin and Electric Bass. This spring we are unveiling our group classes which includes a slow jam class and a beginner guitar class for mature adults.

The Slow Jam Class will be a four week class, one hour per week, and is limited to 8 participants. The class will be held on Tuesdays at 7pm beginning March 22. This class is open to beginners to intermediate players who wish to learn to play in a jam setting or want to advance their jamming skills. Students must know chords. Pre-registration is required. There is a charge of $50 for this class.

The Beginner Guitar Class for Mature Adults is for beginners that are 50 years or older. This class will be a 45 minute class meeting once per week for 6 weeks. Class is limited to 5 participants and pre-registration is required. There is a charge of $50 for this class.

These classes along with game nights, books signings and more are all part of our spring schedule. To find out more information about our events, check out our website at http://www.caposmusicstore.com/ or contact the store at 276-525-1880.

Valentine's Day

Each year about this time we are bombarded by love. Love on t.v., love in movies, love in commercials, love in print. It's everywhere. Love is grand, don't get me wrong. But there are different types of love. Some can be expressed with chocolate and flowers, others through the different means. We are blessed here at Capo's to see expressions of love every day from parents to kids, spouses, partners and friends. But the love that gets to me again and again is the undying love of music that we see come alive in young and old alike.

Every day when we open the store is quiet. We start the music playing and wait for the first customers to come in. Every day, people come and go through the store. They pick up the instruments of their choice and everyday someone falls in love. It may be a Weber mandolin that speaks to them, it might be a Savannah, but everyday someone finds an instrument that speaks to them on a deeper level. It may be the first time they have played or they may be a professional level player but that doesn't matter. When you find that instrument that speaks to you, that gives love back the only way it knows how, then you have made a connection that lasts.
They may ask to take this new found love home, they may leave it for another day, but those connections are made daily.

From these connections, ones made here and elsewhere comes music. One of the favorite times of the week at the store is the Saturday night jam. Every Saturday starting at about 6:30 musicians gather to share the love. Young and old, novice players and pros sit around a circle and for about three hours or so share in the communal experience of love that is music. Come join in the love anytime you have a free Saturday night. Bring someone you love with you. Or, fall in love with something new here at Capo's.

Happy Valentine's Day!

New things in the depths of winter

This winter has certainly shown it's cold face to us in this region. Though we have missed the massive snow storms that have hit the north, we have had our share of winter here too.

At the store, we are on our winter schedule with slightly reduced hours (we now close at 6pm Monday thru Friday) and are not hosting any events other than our regular monthly fare. Each week, weather permitting, on Saturday night we have the acoustic jam which continues to go strong. Once per month we host our singer/songwriter night. This is always a fun event and allows us to showcase some of the amazing talent within the region. And then there is the ARBC. The ARBC is the Appalachian Readers Book Club. This is a club that meets once per month and discusses a book that we have chosen to read that is either based in the Appalachian region or is by an Appalachian author. We have read a lot of great books so far. This month our selection is Velva Jean Learns to Drive and so far, it is a great read. If you are interested in joining the ARBC, please do. There is always room for other opinions and insights and it's not too late to get this months book. Join us for coffee, sweets and great discussions!

Of course there are other fun things to do in cold weather. Like stay inside and pick! We are getting new shipments in this week. With a wide array to choose from plus CDs and DVDs there is plenty to help you get through these cold winter days.

But before you think about packing up and heading down south, don't despair. Remember on Ground Hog Phil and his friends seemed pretty happy outside so as far as I can tell, most that means spring should arrive on time. Until then, stay warm and when cabin fever finds you, come pick a lick at Capo's!
